Lifeguarding

This blended learning course will combine online learning with hands on skills practice to prevent, recognize and respond to emergencies; as well as providing care for injuries and sudden illnesses until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. Participants must register 1 week in advance and complete all eLearning components must be finished before the first scheduled in-person meeting. In order to participate in this course, participants must be able to complete a prerequisite skills assessment consisting of three tests.

  1. Must swim 300 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order: 100 yards of front crawl stroke, 100 yards of breaststroke and 100 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke or a combination of both. All 300 yards must use rhythmic breathing with your face in the water and a stabilizing, propellant kick. 
  2. Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive and retrieve a 10 lb. object, return to the surface, and swim back to the starting point with the object (placing the object on the side of the pool and exiting the water NOT using a ladder or steps) within one minute and forty seconds. While returning to the starting point, you must hold the 10 lb. object with both hands and keep you face above water.
  3. Tread water using only legs; arms under the armpits for two minutes.

Participants must be 15 years of age on, or prior to, the last scheduled class date! Attendance is required at all sessions in order to earn certification. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE!

Shallow Water Lifeguarding

Would you like to earn money while giving back to your community? Become a lifeguard at The Pointe at Ballwin Commons today! This course will certify you in shallow water lifeguard, water park skills, first aid, CPR/AED, and bloodborne pathogens training through a blended learning approach. Online content will be sent out one week before the first in-person meeting. Participants must fully complete their online training and provide proof of completion before the first scheduled in-person meeting. Registration dead line is one week before the first in-person meeting. The course is taught following all American Red Cross policies and is a pass/fail course. Attendance at all scheduled meetings is mandatory- no exceptions can be made.

Prerequisites: Minimum age: 15 years; Swim 300 yards continuously; Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs; Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds by starting in the water, swimming 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, exit the water without using steps or a ladder. Participants who successfully complete the Shallow Water Lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Shallow Water Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED and Waterpark Skills both valid for 2 years and Bloodborne Pathogens Training, valid for 1 year. Attendance is required at all sessions in order to earn certification. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE! 

Class: This course will have both an online and in person portion. The online portion must be completed prior to the in person session. Registration for the course will close 7 days prior to the first in person session review. Once registration is closed, participants will receive an email from Staff regarding how to complete the online portion of the course. When registering, please make sure the participant's email is used. The online content must be completed prior to your first in person class meeting. Friday class will meet 4:30-8:30pm and Saturday/Sunday will meet 7:00am-5:00pm. An hour lunch break will be provided for Saturday and Sunday.

LGI Course

Are you a current American Red Cross lifeguard looking for the next step in your certification? Take this instructor level certification course and become a Lifeguard Instructor today! With an emphasis on hands-on learning, we will certify you to teach American Red Cross lifeguard courses including CPR/AED courses, coaches safety training, and waterpark skills. Participants must hold a current basic-level lifeguarding certification before taking this course and be 17 years of age before the last scheduled meeting. Proof of certification and age verification is required on the first day of class. All participants must pass the skills polish session, complete all online course materials before the first in-person meeting, and attend all scheduled meeting dates and times. The online content will be sent out 1 week prior to the first in-person meeting and proof of completion is required. The Ballwin Parks and Recreation Department is an authorized provider with the American Red Cross and follows all American Red Cross policies. This course is taught on a pass/fail basis. All meeting dates and times are mandatory- no exceptions can be made. All class meetings will occur at The Ballwin Pointe indoor pool and meetings rooms.
